Description:
Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1866 novel Crime and Punishment follows ex-student Raskolnikov in St. Petersburg, Russia. Struggling financially and grappling with his inner demons, Raskolnikov formulates a plan to test his extraordinary theory: that some people, by virtue of their intelligence or station in life, are capable of overcoming law, convention, and moral responsibility. He believes that by murdering an unscrupulous pawnbroker, he can both rid himself of her and use her money to perform good deeds for the benefit of all. After killing the woman with an axe, however, Raskolnikov finds himself increasingly unstable as guilt and paranoia take hold in terrifying ways.
Throughout the story, Dostoevsky explores profound questions about crime, punishment, and human psychology. Raskolnikov struggles with the moral and spiritual consequences of his actions as police investigate the crime. He must also contend with the influence of others, including a former classmate, a prostitute he attempts to help, and a mysterious stranger who seems aware of his guilt. Layered with philosophical ideas and theological themes, Crime and Punishment depicts the psychological unraveling of a murderer and his path to atonement.
