Description:
Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by Irish writer James Joyce, first published in 1914. It is considered a seminal work of modernist fiction and is regarded as one of the most important works of short fiction in 20th century literature. The stories were written realistically to portray middle-class life in Dublin in the early 20th century. Each story is centered around a “epiphany” – a moment in which a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. The stories capture the disillusionment and frustration of Irish society at a time of political turmoil and economic stagnation.
The stories in Dubliners are organized in a way that parallels the maturation and development of Joyce’s characters. They progress from childhood to public life and finally to maturity. The opening story “The Sisters” establishes many themes that are developed throughout the collection, including death and religion. Other famous stories include “Eveline” about a young woman’s struggle between family obligations and the desire to escape from Dublin, and “The Dead” which contains one of the most famous last lines in English literature. Though not widely popular upon its initial publication due to its unflattering portrayal of Irish life, Dubliners has gone on to be recognized as a seminal work of modernist fiction.
