Description:
Ralph Waldo Emerson is considered one of the great minds of 19th century American philosophy and literature. In 1841, he published his first series of essays titled simply Essays. This groundbreaking work established Emerson as a leading voice of transcendentalism and included many essays that remain widely read and influential today.
The collection begins with “History,” where Emerson reflects on the relationship between the individual and society. “Self-Reliance” is perhaps his most famous work and calls for nonconformists to avoid conformity and tradition, instead following their own instincts and unique path. “Compensation” discusses thebalancing of fate and free willwhile “Spiritual Laws” examines natural law in a metaphysical context. “Love” and “Friendship” explore the nature of these human relationships.
In the second half of the collection, Emerson looks at moral philosophy in “Prudence” before embracing optimism about humanity’s potential in “Heroism.” “The Over-Soul”puts forth the concept of an omnipresent and all-unifying spirit. “Circles” discusses perfection, imperfection, andthe endless nature of seeking. Closing the series is “Intellect” on the transcendental view of intellect and reason, followed by “Art” which calls art a spiritual practice.
The Essays encapsulated Emerson’s transcendental ideas and had a significant influence on the transcendentalist movement. They laid out many of the guiding principles of self-reliance, nonconformity, idealism, and freedom of thoughtthat distinguished American Romanticism. Even today, Emersons writingsremain inspirational works that emphasize tapping into an inner voice and following one’s authentic path. The Essays demonstrated Emerson’s talentforusing personal spiritual philosophies to tackle complex issues in a clear and resonant manner.
