Description:
Heart of Darkness was published in 1899 after initially being serialized in Blackwood’s Magazine. Set in the Congo Free State, the novella tells the story of Charles Marlow’s journey up the Congo River and his encounter with the enigmatic ivory trader Mr. Kurtz. However, beyond this basic plot summary, Joseph Conrad intended the work as an exploration of complex philosophical ideas and a commentary on colonialism.
The backdrop for the story was the Belgian Congo, which was controlled as the personal fiefdom of King Leopold II of Belgium. Conrad drew from his own experiences sailing on the Congo River to depict the horrific realities of the brutal regime’s dehumanizing treatment of indigenous peoples under the guise of “civilizing” enterprise. The novella examines the corrupting influence of power and unchecked commercialism on human morality. It also delves into the darkness that lurks within all people when faced with such an environment devoid of oversight or law.
Since its publication, Heart of Darkness has sparked extensive discussion about colonialism, racism, responses to the Other, and the capacity for evil that exists in all human societies and institutions. It remains profoundly influential in literature, film and other mediums.
