Description:

Fyodor Dostoyevsky published The Brothers Karamazov in 1880, shortly before his death. Widely considered one of the greatest novels ever written, it addresses profound philosophical questions that had long fascinated Dostoyevsky, like faith, reason, free will and the existence of God.

The story centers on the Karamazov family – the landowner Fyodor Pavlovich and his four sons. Eldest son Dmitri is passionate yet impulsive. Ivan is intellectual yet detached. Youngest son Alyosha is spiritual. Their half-brother Smerdyakov complicates their dynamic.

Living in 19th century Russia amid rapid modernization, Dostoyevsky explored the cultural upheavals of his time through the Karamazovs. As religious faith declined, rationalism rose. He examined the tension between free will and divine providence, and humanity’s capacity for both good and evil.

Through the complex relationships and inner struggles of these brothers, Dostoyevsky crafted a masterpiece that still resonates today in its probing of eternal questions of morality, meaning and God within a changing world.
