Bio:
Marcus Aurelius was a 2nd century Roman Emperor who ruled from AD 161 until his death in 180. He is widely considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. During his reign, the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent after a series of successful wars. However, he also had to deal with threats of invasion, natural disasters, and a devastating plague.
Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome in 121 AD and came from a wealthy family. He received a good education that set him on the path to a life of public service. He demonstrated great leadership skills and rose through the ranks, becoming consul at the young age of 36. In 161, upon the death of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius became sole emperor and ruled jointly with Lucius Verus.
As emperor, Marcus Aurelius spent most of his reign at war, fighting against invaders like the Parthians and Germanic tribes. Despite these military challenges, he still found time to write his philosophical work “Meditations” which provides insights into Stoic philosophy and leadership. The “Meditations” became an influential work and one of the most accessible means of understanding Stoic philosophy, especially his views on duty, perseverance, and living according to nature.
